S. William Yost is an adjunct professor of Operations and Technology Management in The
Anderson School at UCLA where he teaches the required core Operations and Technology
Management course as well as the Operations Strategy and Policy course in UCLA's MBA
and Executive MBA programs. Prof. Yost has developed two popular graduate courses, Managing
Service and Managing Entrepreneurial Operations. Additional teaching interests of his
lie in the area of managing the operational impact of changing organizations to compete
in a global marketplace, and, with the use, and effectiveness, of advanced technology
for competitive advantage in entrepreneurially managed companies. He is actively seeking
and developing case materials in support of all of these courses.
His career is diverse, with over 20 years in industrial positions, plus an additional
4 years as a presidential appointee in the executive branch of the federal government
and 3 years in full-time management consulting. With many of his positions at the officer
level, the industrial experience included nine years in energy exploration and production,
six years in the manufacture of non-defense industrial products, three years in industrial
services and supplies, and four years in aerospace engineering and manufacturing. A
large proportion of his industrial activities involved the start-up and management of
small businesses. As a consequence, he possesses considerable hands-on experience in
start-up and turnaround management, both from the entrepreneur's side as well as the
corporate venturing side.
He began teaching in 1986 at The Anderson School receiving the Outstanding Teacher of
the Year award from the graduating MBA classes of 1988, 1990 and 1995 and from the Executive
MBA classes of 1989, 1991, 1992 and 1996. Also in 1991, the faculty of The Anderson
School awarded him the Citibank Prize for Excellence in Teaching. In December, 1996
a Business Week survey named him one of the best professors of entrepreneurship in the
US.
He is the author of some dozen articles and a text, Production Management Analysis.
At Anderson, he has served as the Director of the MBA Program in Technology Management
and is a member of the faculty's Teaching Improvement Committee, the Advisory Board
of the Price Entrepreneurial Studies Center and The Triennial MBA Program Taskforce.
Professor Yost holds a doctorate from the Harvard Business School, where he was an Arthur
D. Little Research Fellow, an MBA from UCLA, and a BA in geological sciences from UC,
Berkeley. He serves on the board of directors of a number of small companies and as
a consultant to an amazing variety of clients on an amazing variety of management issues.
