Transformational Leadership and Coaching. Kevin Cashman, author and CEO of
Leader Source led an interactive discussion and experiential learning session linking leadership
theory with practice. HARRT members examined their approach to leadership by discussing principles
of leadership and various competency models to redefine leadership based on contribution versus role
with emphasis placed on connecting capacity to grow as a whole person to ability to grow sustaining
organizations. This Round Table explored the implications personally and organizationally of leading
by coping versus leading through character and learning the three core skills of practicing transformative
coaching: Building Awareness, Building Commitment and Building Practice.

Managing Diversity: Enhancing Organizational Effectiveness. David Porter, Director of
Graduate Programs and Assistant Professor of Management at the Howard University School of
Business, led the discussion on Managing Diversity. Several paradigms for understanding diversity
were examined in the context of how diversity can be effectively leveraged to increase profitability,
learning, creativity, and organizational flexibility in adapting to internal and market changes, and
individual and company growth.

Nurturing and Engaging Talent: A Shared Responsibility. Tom Davenport, Principal and
head of Towers Perrin's Organization and Employee Research practice, presented a macro
perspective on workforce trends and business, as well as strategic implications for HR
policies related to talent retention and engagement. Beverly Kaye, author and CEO of Career
Systems International, provided guidelines on how managers and employees can take charge to
enhance the skills and knowledge of employees. Discussions were moderated by Professor Bill
Yost of the UCLA Anderson School whose teaching and scholarship focuses on operational strategy,
changing organizations, and entrepreneurial managed companies.

The Walt Disney Company led the discussion of HR Strategy in Uncertain Times. Issues that were addressed
were: leadership skills needed when facing reduced budgets and economic uncertainty, as well as, the impact
of uncertainty on employment and talent management. HARRT members also discussed possible alternatives that
would adjust compensation and retirement.

discussed cost and quality drivers and long and short-term strategies
for controlling costs through education, restructuring, cost
and incentive sharing, and balancing health and risk management.

Susan Ettner, Jorja Prover and James Greenwood led a UCLA
panel discussion to comment on the psychological and safety
impact of these events and the opportunities for strengthening
employee-employer ties and emergency response systems going
forward.
